Subsidy removal: FG yet to commence payment of N75,000 palliatives despite receiving $299m World Bank loan

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government has yet to kickstart payment of N75,000 to vulnerable Nigerians, despite the World Bank confirming disbursing part of Nigeria’s $800 million fuel subsidy removal palliatives loan.   gathered from a World Bank document that the development bank had disbursed $299.99 million, representing 37.5 per cent of the loan, to the Federal Government under the National Social Safety Net Program-Scale Up. The World Bank confirmed that $442.88 million is yet to be disbursed to Nigeria. Recall that to cushion the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal since June 2023, the government unveiled a $800 million Social Safety Net Programme, a conditional cash transfer scheduled to be implemented by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs & Poverty Alleviation. Investment Rebounds in Stock Market as All-Share Index Rises By 0.78

The Lagos bourse rebounded after the previous sessions’ pullback as the benchmark Index gained 0.78 percent to close at 54,224.35 points. Renewed interest in telco heavyweight, Airtel Africa Plc whose share price gained (+3.85%) pushed the broader index into positive territory. Consequently, the year-to-date (YTD) return rose to 5.80 percent, while market capitalization gained N228.74billion to close at N29.54trillion. Analysis of Monday’s market activities showed trade turnover settled higher relative to the previous session, with the value of transactions up by 46.21 percent. A total of 154.63million shares valued at N5.51billion were exchanged in 3,095 deals. GTCO (-0.20%) led the volume chart with 36.68million units traded while AIRTELAFRI (+3.85%) led the value chart in deals worth N2.94billion. Passengers Groan as NRC insists on Cash Transactions

Despite the adoption of cashless payment systems across different segments of the country, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has insisted on cash payment for its transactions, especially for fares along its Lagos-Ibadan route. While other businesses are exploring the Point of Sale and online banking services, it was observed that officials of the NRC were not accepting bank transfers, neither were they using the PoS service. When visited the Mobolaji Johnson Station in Lagos it was discovered that ticket officials were only accepting new naira notes. Also, a visit to the Babatunde Fashola Station showed that the ticketing officials accepted only new notes. One of the officials said the management does not allow bank transfers nor deploy the use of PoS machines, stating it was against their policy. Buhari Unveils Redesigned Naira Notes

President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled the redesigned naira denominations of N1000, N500 and N200. He performed the ceremony shortly before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday. Fielding questions from correspondents after the event, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, said the apex bank is determined to make Nigeria a cashless economy. He said the amount of money that can be withdrawn from the counter will be drastically restricted, noting that anyone who wants to withdraw substantial cash would be tracked by security agents to determine its use. He insisted that the January 31st deadline for the exchange of old notes will not be extended, noting that there are over 1 million points in the country where people can deposit their old notes. Emefiele said the apex bank must now regularly redesign currency after every five to eight years.

Aviation Unions Set To Shut Down Airports Nationwide

The amalgamation of unions in the country’s aviation sector has protested against the planned demolition of the head offices of the aviation agencies by the federal government, warning that any attempt to go ahead with this policy will be met with total cessation of works at all the airports in Nigeria. Speaking for the unions yesterday, the Secretary General of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Comrade Ocheme Aba on what the unions termed: ‘That the aviation road map may not become aviation mishap’, the unions called on the federal government and the minister of aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika to urgently halt the demolition plans and other numerous projects already set aside in less than three months the government has.
